BAGHDAD, Iraq – Task Force Lightning donned their combat patch Nov. 27, Thanksgiving Day. According to regulation, the Former War-time Service Shoulder Sleeve Insignia can be worn after a unit has hit the ground in a combat zone. This is a recent change to the Army regulation as Soldiers previously had to wait at least 30 days before earning their patch.
For some of the Soldiers, it was their first chance to join the elite fraternity who have already earned their right shoulder patch.
"Less than one percent of Americans chose to serve in the military and even less than that are combat veterans. You are in very select company," said Lt. Col. Robert Bailes, battalion commander, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division currently attached to the 39th Inf. Brigade Combat Team, Multi-National Division – Baghdad.
For those who were getting their patch for the first time, they were assured that they are now part of elite company.
"Whether or not this is your first, second or even your third combat patch; you are all part of something special. You are all Combat Vets," said Command Sgt Maj. Gary Hunt, battalion senior enlisted leader, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division currently attached to the 39th Inf. Brigade Combat Team, Multi-National Division – Baghdad.
