MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII--Lance Cpl. Austin Cahill died on March 17, 2018 in a motor vehicle accident in Kailua, Hawaii.
Cahill was a 21-year-old machine gunner in Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
"Austin Cahill thoroughly enjoyed being a U.S. Marine and we were lucky to have him in our battalion," said Lt. Col. Eric Meador, battalion commander, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines. "He was well liked and respected for his experience. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
He joined the unit in Sept. 2016 as an active-duty Marine after graduating from the School of Infantry. His other military schools include advanced machine gunner course. He enlisted into the Marine Corps from Tampa, Florida in March 2016.
Cahill deployed with 1st Bn., 3rd Marines from June to Dec. 2017 to Okinawa, Japan on the unit deployment program to serve as part of the forward deployed forces.
His awards include the Korean Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, and a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
