More than 114 middle and high school girls from about 20 Charleston-area schools will visit Joint Base Charleston Tuesday, March 20, 2018 to learn about jobs in aviation as part of the 11th annual Women in Aviation Career Day.
The students will also tour a C-17 aircraft and learn about aviation-related career fields not traditionally occupied by women. This year’s guest speaker is Air Force Reserve Command Chief Master Sgt. Ericka Kelly – Air Force Reserve’s highest enlisted Airman.
This career day is sponsored by the 315th Airlift Wing and Women in Aviation, a group that encourages women to seek career opportunities in aviation. According to a 2017 statistic from the Federal Aviation Administration, of the nearly 609,306 active pilots in the United States, only about seven percent are women, and women account for almost 30 percent of the more than 671,222 non-pilot aviation jobs in the United States.
The event is Tuesday, March 20, 2018. Media interested in covering the event can meet at the Dorchester Road gate at 10:45 a.m. to cover the C-17 and career exhibit. Joint Base Charleston Women in Aviation program members and some of the girls attending this year’s event will be available for interviews. Arrangements can also be made to cover the guest speaker earlier in the day.
