The American Red Cross of Misawa hosts a build your own emergency disaster kit workshop at Misawa Air Base, Japan, every Friday in March to promote readiness and safety.
This five-year-old event provides individuals the opportunity to build their own preparedness starter kit, containing first-aid supplies and information on remaining safe during various natural disasters emergencies.
“The time to prepare for a disaster, is before the disaster strikes,” said Karen Jorgenson, the Red Cross of Misawa regional program manager. “It’s important everyone has a disaster kit so they are able to respond efficiently in the event of an emergency.”
When individuals create a plan and possess the essential safety knowledge on responding to a natural disaster they contribute to the well-being of their family.
“Knowing that families have the means to be safe and respond appropriately to disasters can help ease stress our service members face,” said Jorgenson. “Preparedness contributes to peace of mind and allows service members to focus on their work.”
The training and tools provided contribute to the goal of keeping Misawa Air Base families safe and equipped.
“Not only is this kit convenient, but it was easy to make,” said Britni Connally, spouse of Senior Airman Tanner Connally, a 35th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal equipment journeyman. “I’m thankful to have these extra essentials for my family. Free supplies are always helpful, especially if you have a family and a strict budget.”
