Corps installs last blue roof in Puerto Rico

Contractors working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers installed the last temporary blue roof today in Puerto Rico, for residences damaged by hurricanes Irma and Maria, bringing the total roofs complete to 59,469.

Last fall Puerto Rico sustained significant damages from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Hurricane Maria was a Category 4 Hurricane, which was a direct hit to the island of Puerto Rico.

“Over the last 180 days the USACE Blue Roof Team has worked relentlessly to restore normalcy to the life of Puerto Ricans,” Michael Rodgers, the Recovery Field Office-Puerto Rico Temporary Roofing Mission Manager said. “It has been a challenging mission but significantly rewarding. “It has been an honor to work with the people of Puerto Rico and all of the members of Blue Roof Team.”

Operation Blue Roof is a program managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The program’s goal is to help protect property and allow residents to stay in their homes after a natural disaster by providing temporary, plastic-sheeting roofs to eligible homes until permanent repairs can be made. The temporary roofs are designed to last approximately 30 days.
