Marines with II Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group conducted Special Patrol Insertion and Extraction (SPIE) training as part of a Helicopter Rope Suspension Technique (HRST) recertification course at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 23, 2018.

Infantry units use SPIE line operations to rapidly insert or extract Marines from an area difficult for helicopters to land in. In practice, it looks like a half a dozen or so people dangling from an aircraft.

Personnel on the ground wearing harnesses hook up to a rope thrown from the helicopter. Personnel are then lifted from the extraction zone until they are fully suspended and clear of obstructions.

HRST masters recertified their yearly qualification with the Expeditionary Operations Training Group Ropes and Recovery Branch.

“No matter where you are you always have an insert or an extract,” said Sgt. Jordan Smith with II MEF Ropes and Recovery Branch, EOTG. “Whether the landing zone is available or not it utilizes more capabilities for that unit forward deployed to get in and out of hot zones or whatever they’re going to do. They don’t always have to have a bird to land for them to get out.”

II MEF EOTG Ropes and Recovery personnel prioritized getting Marines recertified in a timely manner to maintain operational readiness.

“What we did today was important because we were able to recertify several HRST masters from units from La Roda, Spain to security forces up in Virginia, to several units here in Camp Lejeune,” said Capt. Adam Aikens, officer in charge of Ropes and Recovery Branch, EOTG. “By sending their HRST masters through our recertification course, they cut down on the amount of time needed to give up that Marine while maintaining and increasing operational capabilities abroad.”

Students must be mature, ready to learn, and be able to apply and maintain technical skills for these courses. They will then return to their units as an operational asset for deployment, said Aikens.
