SHREVEPORT, La. – Veterans young and old gathered in Fair Park High School's gymnasium for a program to honor area veterans, Nov. 11, in Shreveport, La.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends," said Maj. Effson C. Bryant Jr., chaplain at Barksdale Air Force Base, quoting a scripture from the Bible, John 15:13.

The program began with the posting of the colors and invocation by the Fair Park High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Following the remarks by Bryant, the program proceeded into the "Laying of Roses." A rose was laid in honor and memory of fallen Soldiers from World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and the ongoing War on Terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan.

During the playing of "Amazing Grace," by the Fair Park High School band, a by-name roll call of all Fair Park High School veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice in our nation's wars was given by Beatrice R. Maxile, a staff member at Fair Park.

The firing squad from 2nd Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment led by Master Sgt. Wilburn T. Sneed of Bossier City, La., offered a 3-Volley Salute to commemorate those who lost their lives for their country. The 3-Volley Salute is performed at military and police funerals as part of the ceremony and is usually done by an Honor Guard team.

"I felt honored by the program and I think it was a good opportunity for the students to get an understanding of what it means to be a veteran," said Sgt. Ashley D. Robinson of Shreveport, La., and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
