Throughout most of my life, I’ve lived in a big city in Brazil called Maringa. I was born there and grew up there. It is my favorite city in Brazil because they have almost everything, but they don’t have the Marines.
I lived in the U.S. on and off with my mom from age ten through 18. She became a U.S. citizen in 2004. When I was 14, I became a citizen too.
Throughout High School I lived with my grandparents and helped take care of them in Brazil. During the school year, I lived in Brazil and would visit my mom in the U.S. during breaks.
Becoming a Marine has always been my dream since I was a child. The U.S. Marine Corps really got my attention when I was younger and it has always been in my head. The pride of belonging and everything the Marines are attracted me to join. Everything they do and what they’ve done in the past shows how great they are.
In Maringa, I attended Unicesumar University and majored in Foreign Trading. After I graduated from college, September of last year, I made the decision to come to the U.S. to become a Marine and reach my goals.
All my friends in Brazil liked to party. All they did was party seven days a week. They didn’t have a perspective on life. I was tired of that. When I told them I was going to do better things it was hard for them to understand. I told them there are more important things than to party. Some of my friends think I’m crazy.
It was a difficult choice to leave Brazil. I left my entire life in there including my family and my girlfriend to come to the U.S., but it has been worth it because I am following my dream. I made the decision and saved up money to fly out here to change my life. I have the opportunity and I want to use it.
I have been working out a lot with Staff Sgt. Rheaume and the other recruiters at [Recruiting Substation] Plymouth to become a Marine. They are helping me prepare mentally and physically.
My goal in the Marine Corps is to be an infantryman. I want to become a better person than I am now. I think it will be very helpful to me.
Everyone has the opportunity to change the world. What people do right now is what makes the difference. It can be a little thing but your decisions always make a difference.
