This team of skilled professionals use their skill sets to set up the bare base operations. The base will consist of sleep quarters, an eating facility and make shift offices.
It is a choreographed effort and everyone must work in unison in order to get the task at hand completed before the main body arrives. The Engineering Apprentice members are tasked with measuring out where each of the tents which will be erected. By establishing the distance and size of each of the tents, this will ensure the tents are spaced properly.
"There is a lot of man involved, mostly geometry," said Airman First Class Luis Amendariz, 150th CE, EA.
The device used is a S5 Trimble Total Station, which is used in surveying campaigns. The device makes the task much faster and can go from field-to-office for quick data capture and processing. For this training exercise, the coordinates are being typed in manually and calculated on the spot instead of sending the data back to the office.
"The equipment has expedited the surveying process making a bare base setup expedient, more accurate and easier," said Master Sgt. Steven Schmidt, 150th CE, EA. "This allows for one person to do the job that would have taken about four people to do in the past."
The device is so refined that it will guide the EA should they need to reposition themselves by moving to a certain direction so that they can establish a set point.
"Once the sweet spot is defined, I spray paint the four corners, which will be where the tents will be layout according to the plan," said Senior Airman Austin Henzie, 150th CE, EA.
Despite the equipment making the job easier in the long run, there is plenty of training involved in learning how to properly use the equipment. Field training exercises help them hone in on training opportunities such as this. Learning on the equipment and improving on the individual's' skill levels, while out in the field, is the best way to get on-the-job training.
