The warrior workout program takes place on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton Fitness Center, and is offered to help Sailors and civilians with access to base stay in shape while having fun.

“Being a part of this class enhances your workout,” said Airman Katherine Hicks, from El Paso, Texas, assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). “Seeing others work hard, makes you want to put in more effort. It also is great to have that bond with your classmates and know they won’t let you take a day off.”

Working out is something that can relieve stress or take out the frustration of a long day’s work. Some Sailors use the workout classes to make new friends who share like-minded activities.

“I was new to the command and didn’t know that many people,” said Hicks. “I’ve met a few different people in the class, and they’ve all been supportive of my goals, and it truly doesn’t matter what rank that person is because there’s no rank when I work out. We’re all on the same page and going through the same exercise.”

Brad Franco, an instructor at the fitness center teaches warrior workout and stresses the importance of staying physically fit.

“Everyone wants to be healthier,” said Franco. “As a country, we have an obesity problem. Being a part of programs that get people active and having fun makes working out feel less like a chore. It’s hard to get started, but fitness instructors like myself are here to help.”

Staying physically fit is an important aspect for Sailors as they have to pass their physical readiness test (PRT) which is administered twice a year.

“We do more functional workouts like tire flips, sand bags and getting people to move in ways they wouldn’t during a traditional workout,” said Franco. “This program is designed to be dynamic. It takes the participant out of their comfort zone and utilizes all muscle groups.”

Hicks also said programs like warrior workout are fun, challenging and at the end of the day she feels great because she knows she got a good workout in.

Working out doesn’t have to be all work and no fun. Sailors have plenty of opportunity to take part in fitness programs like warrior workout. Whether it’s losing weight or getting fit for a PRT, staying physically fit can be a lifetime goal.
