Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska — An instructional systems design team from Hill Air Force Base, Utah, gathered footage of Airmen on the Eielson Air Force Base flightline March 27 for an Air Force-wide cold weather training video.

Staff Sgt. Khalil Bashir, an instructional systems designer assigned to the 367th Training Support Squadron, said the footage will be used to create a training video for cold weather indoctrination.

The video will cover all of the general safety concerns faced by those working in cold conditions.

“It’s pretty much about everything safety related,” said Bashir.

It will cover a variety of information including what to wear, cold-related injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia, and driving in winter conditions.

After visiting Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, the team decided to use Eielson as the primary location for the video. Airmen who work in Alaska face extreme cold during the winter months, which can add an extra challenge to accomplishing the mission.

“When it is 50 below outside, it takes a special person to work in that type of environment, prepping aircraft for flight and launching them out,” said Master Sgt. Benjamin W. Haynes, flight chief assigned to the 168th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

Footage for the training video is being shot entirely in Alaska and shows Airmen from the 168th Wing Alaska Air National Guard as well as active duty Airmen from the 354th Fighter Wing here.

“There is a reason why other bases call us or visit for arctic operating procedures and advice,” Haynes said. “Our crew chiefs and back shops have mastered working in an arctic environment.”

Air Force Global Strike Command, headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, requested the video, Bashir said. This new production will replace the video that has been used since the early 1990s.

Staff Sgt. Candice Barnes, an instructional systems designer assigned to the 376th TRSS, said a video project like this normally takes about six months. She explained the training video will be ready for release in about three months.

The video will be used to prepare Airmen stationed at U.S. Air Force bases worldwide who must work in cold weather conditions.
