Dozens of installation community members took time out to listen to Col. Michelle Link, commander of the 372nd Engineer Brigade at Fort Snelling, Minn., give her presentation as the guest speaker for the Women’s History Month observance March 22, 2018, at Fort McCoy, Wis.
Link reflected on her journey in her Army career to become and engineer brigade commander.
The 1st Battalion, 351st Brigade Support Battalion served as the organization to coordinate the event.
Link attended Army engineer officer school as one of five women out of 150 students in one of the first few classes that allowed female students.
Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Public Law 97-28, which authorized and requested the president to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week,” according to the National Archives
Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Public Law 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.”
Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.
