Marines and Sailors with I Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group attended the I MEF Support Battalion activation ceremony at Camp Pendleton, Calif., April 11, 2018.

During the ceremony, Lt. Col. William Gorsuch, the commanding officer of MSB, uncased the colors of the unit, signifying the birth of the newest unit in the Marine Corps. The ceremony also featured remarks from Col. Dawn R. Alonso, the commanding officer of I MIG, MSB’s superior command.

I MEF Support Battalion will assume the administrative and logistical support tasks for the I MEF command element, a responsibility that formerly fell on the I MIG command deck. With this change, I MSB will focus on undertaking battalion-level tasks so I MIG can focus on operations in the information environment.

“This reorganization is the continuation of [retired] Commandant Gen. Alfred M. Gray’s vision for what was a surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence group back in 1988,” said Col. Dawn Alonso, Commanding Officer, I MIG. “Gen. Gray wanted to streamline intelligence support to the MEF commanders.”

In allowing the MIG to further focus on operations with the information environment, the activation of the MSB is the next step to further I MEF’s readiness.

“[Our mission] is to provide combat service support, security and administrative services to the MEF command element and the MIG,” said Gorsuch. “Specifically, we provide food services, motor transport, engineering, supply functions and administrative functions to accomplish that mission.”

The units that will provide these capabilities are the MSB’s subordinate elements: the I MSB Headquarters Company and Combat Service Support Company.

HQ Co. is tasked with providing the administrative and training support necessary for I MSB and separate organizations of the I MEF Command Element. This support will facilitate uninterrupted operations and enable training events, exercises and deployments for I MSB and I MEF CE.

“HQ Co. and CSSC both bring different capabilities to I MSB” said 1st Sgt. John Miller, company first sergeant for I MSB HQ Co. “Here at HQ Co., we support I MEF CE operations administratively, which relieves the burden of administrative tasks previously belonging to [I MIG HQ].”

CSSC’s mission is to provide strategic, operational and tactical logistics with a main focus of planning, organizing and managing logistical support to keep I MEF Marines in the fight.

“In order to accomplish the mission, CSSC and HQ Co. must work together by providing I MSB with administrative and logistical capabilities to support the I MEF CE,” said 1st Sgt. Luis M. Vasquez-Estrada, company first sergeant for CSSC. “CSSC provides the assets necessary to support I MSB and I MEF units conducting exercises and operations abroad.”

I MSB will be located in the Del Mar area of Camp Pendleton, postured to provide the supplies, administrative and logistical support to I MEF and its deploying units.
