SAN DIEGO (Apr. 13, 2018) – Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) held its fourth annual Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Cup at Adm. Prout Field Friday, Feb. 13.

The SAPR Cup is an event where commands from all over NBSD compete in various athletic and teamwork competitions as well as raising awareness.

“The main reason for today’s events is to raise awareness about sexual assault and how to prevent it,” said SAPR advocate Lindsay Colletti. “The other part is to get commands to come out and enjoy the day and compete in events they like to do.”

Some of the events that were held are tug-a-war, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and relay races.

“One of the Sailors’ favorite events to compete in is the tug-a-war,” said SAPR advocate Moniece Montoya. “The Sailors competing and watching really get into the event and it just makes for a good positive atmosphere, which is what we are striving to have at an event like this.”

With the main focus of the event being awareness about sexual assault and how to prevent it, the SAPR team hosted a booth where advocates informed Sailors about what they can do to prevent or stop sexual assault.

“Our team has a booth set up with very knowledgeable advocates willing and wanting to give out information about SAPR and what it really means,” said Colleti. “We even brought our ‘What Would You Do Wheel’. Sailors spin the wheel and get a scenario and then tell us what they would do in that situation, and for answering they get to choose from one of our prizes we brought with us today,” she said.

The message that Colleti wants everyone to take away from the SAPR Cup and from visiting the SAPR advocates booth is one of support.

“We want to let everyone who has been through something awful like sexual assault know that you are not alone,” said Colleti. “There are people who truly want to help and do care about you. Don’t let the fear of what happened stop you from reaching out for help. As advocates we are here for you and your support only, so please come to us and we will help you get through it and will always be there to help.”
