MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. --- Removing fasteners is a long tedious procedure that includes the use of various tools. Marines were introduced to a new system that simplifies the process and shortens maintenance time. Marine Aviation Logistic Squadron 26 is one of the first units to purchase the Perfect Point E-Drill on Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., April 04, 2018.
The Perfect Point’s electro-discharge machining technology removes the hardest fasteners quickly and easily. It uses a forceless cut, with precision that will reduce the risk of damage to the airframe, the time of removal and the amount of debris.
“It is very important in our job because it is 60 percent of what we do,” Said Cpl. Derrick Taylor, an aircraft intermediate-level structure mechanic with MALS-26. “It makes our work a lot more efficient with less tool marks, (and) the gear comes out cleaner.”
With the old system Marines with MALS-26 would take about 10 minutes to remove one to three fasteners. The old process involved either a hammer or pliers and a chisel. Which chipped the airframe and would produce more work for the Marines to repair.
The E-Drill system uses a closed-loop fluid system, filled with filtered water to flush the area and removes cut debris. Due to the aggressive water that flushes during the cut, there is no heat transfer to the surrounding area.
“The old system, consisted of different tools from different drill boxes, vice this E-Drill; everything is in one box,” said Taylor. “Everything comes together, and using the gun is like three different tools in one.”
