The Green Berets of 10th SFG(A) showed their appreciation to the 4th CAB for all of the help they received from them throughout the year, so the Green Beret-led CLS training was a fitting way to integrate and cross train further while devoting time to work nine-line medical evacuation (MedEvac) training with a 4th CAB UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter.

“It’s always nice to give back to 4th CAB. They supported us numerous times throughout the year during free-fall training,” said a Green Beret free fall team sergeant with the 10th SFG(A). “Being Special Forces Soldiers, we’re force multipliers, and us coming out here and training conventional Army Soldiers prepares them for future deployments.”

The CLS course included two days of classroom instruction and an exam covering techniques and procedures. Training encompassed evaluating a casualty, controlling bleeding and managing airways. Further training included treating penetrated chest trauma, using an improvised litter and requesting a nine-line MedEvac.

Requesting a nine-line MedEvac is when a Soldier communicates critical medical and tactical information to a medical service provider in order to receive patient evacuation on the Black Hawk helicopter.

“The training we received this week is invaluable in many ways because these guys are experts at what they do,” said Pfc. Zachary Graber, a nodal network systems operator-maintainer with 10th SFG(A). “I’m glad I volunteered for this course. It was some of the best training I’ve ever had.”

During the final day, the training culminated into an exercise consisting of 18 Soldiers from 10th SFG(A) and 13 Soldiers from 4th CAB who teamed up in squads to treat and evacuate patients under simulated battle conditions.

“This was my first opportunity to get realistic training like this, and it was challenging, but fun,” said Pfc. Ana Romero, a wheeled vehicle mechanic with 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, 4th CAB. “The final lane with the helicopter hovering over your head was intense, and I hope to do more of this type of training again.”
