SILVERDALE, Wash. – Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, commander, Navy Region Northwest (NRNW), presented the Retention Excellence Award (REA) plaque and pennant to Navy Region Northwest Career Counselor and Retention Advisor, Senior Chief Navy Counselor Jean-Hero Lamy on behalf of Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), in the Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor Theater April 18.

The annual retention excellence award recognizes superior command accomplishment in executing programs and policies that best enable our sailors to succeed in their Navy careers and directly supports the concept of “Brilliant on the Basics.”

“This is what I always considered the ultimate team award,” said Lamy. “This isn’t an individual thing, there’s a piece that looks at retention, but also they cover compliance.”

To qualify for the award commands must score a minimum of 90 points on the annual command information program review, meet or exceed set aggregated reenlistment and attrition benchmarks, receive no 'failed to submit' incidences in the career waypoints system, and meet at least an 85 percent compliance for the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) Act of 2011.

For fiscal year 2017 Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Naval Station Everett, Naval Base Kitsap, Transient Personnel Unit - Puget Sound and region Staff all have exceeded the criteria for the REA and were selected to receive the award.

“It means a lot,” said Lamy. “With the retention excellence award, people might look at it like people decided to stay in the Navy. But it is more than that. If the climate is great, if people feel happy to come to work every day, they will perform, they will re-enlist, and they will make the Navy a career.”

This is the NRNW’s 4th Consecutive REA. Following the announcement message, awardees may fly the retention excellence pennant and paint their anchors gold until the release of the following fiscal year award message.

“It starts from the top, from the admiral, to the chief of staff, to the command master chief, that sets up the type of climate that when people come to work they feel happy to be there,” said Lamy. “It feels good to be a part of such a great team that fits that type of climate.”

“The region has won this now for 4 years in a row,” said Mayes. “This is a testament to our career counselors and to our supervisors for encouraging our folks to stay in. I will also tell you now that your navy is growing is going to grow over the next five years. It’s more important that we keep the folks in.”
