SUBANG AIR FORCE BASE, Malaysia – Service members deployed in support of Pacific Partnership 2018 (PP18), and Malaysian Royal Air Force service members held a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) seminar that focused on flight safety and aviation medicine on board Subang Air Force Base, April 17.
PP18 joint service providers alongside partners from the Malaysian Royal Air Force talked about enhancing their aeromedicine abilities together in the event of a natural disaster.
“It is all about interoperability,” said Her Majesties Royal Air Force Flt. Lt. Stuart Lowry, medical regulation control officer, Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19). “We are here to learn and work together. This is a good opportunity for us to build on the knowledge and experiences we each bring to the table as it can help to ensure our overall preparedness during an unexpected disaster.”
U.S., Malaysian, and other partner nation’s participants highlighted the many capabilities and overviewed the steps involved in treating a patient from point of injury, to on scene care, then what treatment is involved when aviation medicine is needed to extract a patient and ultimately bring the patient back home.
“Participating in HADR events like the one today is rewarding and also a great learning experience,” said Army Sgt. Christina Richardson. “We can help each other acquire new strategies while also learning new ways to operate. It’s what PP18 is all about.”
HADR symposiums will continue throughout the PP18 mission in Malaysia, uniting various U.S. and partner nation military members with a multitude of organizations within Malaysia, developing long lasting relationships to enhance regional stability and disaster relief preparedness.
Pacific Partnership 2018 consists of more than 800 U.S. military personnel stationed worldwide, working side-by-side with host nation counterparts to be better prepared for potential humanitarian aid and disaster response situations.
