Commander, Submarine Squadron (COMSUBRON) 15 and Performance Monitoring Team detachment (PMT det) Guam Sailors and family members observed Earth Day by conducting a clean-up behind the cemetery in Agat, Guam, April 20.

Earth Day is celebrated officially April 22 and is designed to promote environmental awareness and appreciation.

“Guam is a beautiful island and a wonderful place to be stationed, not only for the missions we do in the Submarine Force but also for the friendly people and the incredible beaches,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jason Senecal, PMT det Guam Officer in Charge. “It’s important for us to be involved in the community and to teach our children about taking care of our environment and the island so it’s in better shape for those who come after us.”

More than 20 volunteers collected approximately 1,800 pounds of trash and debris. Among the collected items were old tires, a toilet, broken television sets, a deep freezer and a grill.

“The cemetery in Agat is often overlooked during clean-ups, and it needs attention,” said Machinist’s Mate Nuclear 1st Class Clayton Smith, who is assigned to PMT det Guam and coordinated the clean-up. “Earth Day is a great opportunity for us to get out in the local community and clean up our shoreline, but everyone can do their part by tossing their trash in trash cans and recycling. We don’t need a big clean-up for people to help keep our island clean.”

The Agat Mayor’s office assisted with disposal of the trash collected during the clean-up and thanked the Sailors for helping keep the island clean.

Sailors from COMSUBRON 15 and PMT det Guam participate in community relation (COMREL) events throughout the year to include events with their sister village of Inarajan and the annual Guam International Coastal Clean-up in September.

COMSUBRON 15 is located at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam in Apra Harbor, Guam, and consists of four Los Angeles-class attack submarines. The squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support to these commands. Also based out of Naval Base Guam are submarine tenders USS Frank Cable (AS 40) and USS Emory S. Land (AS 39). The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.
