MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (April 23, 2018) – U.S. service members and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni residents participated in the Amazing Race 2018 event at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, April 21, 2018.

The station USO and American Red Cross hosted the event for anyone over the age of 18.

Teams consisting of four members started at the station high school track and ran to 10 checkpoints throughout the air station.

“We wanted to have a really fun event for all the Marines, sailors and civilians here on base,” said Tammie Pech, a regional program manager with the American Red Cross. “They got to race around the base, see 10 organizations and get introduced to their services. In a fun way, they were introduced to what is going on in the community.”

Organizations that supported the event were Families OverComing Under Stress, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, Marine Family Life Counselor, station thrift store, station library, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Navy Federal Credit Union, the Marine Corps Community Services Youth and Teen Center, Sumo Spouses and Marine Corps Family Team Building.

Each organization hosted a checkpoint during the race where the teams had to complete a small task and learn more about the support services to get a clue for the next location in the race. The race challenged the participants’ mental and physical abilities.

After the teams completed all the checkpoints, or ran out of time, they received a final clue that directed them back to the start of the race for the final challenge. The final challenge consisted of relays where the top three teams went head-to-head for the title of winner. The final challenges included eating contests, performing CPR and word puzzles.

At the end of the race, only one team could claim first place. The team who won was the “Sole Sisters.” Second place was awarded to the “Marine Aircraft Group 12 S-10.” Prizes were handed out to the top two finishers and lunch was provided for participants.

“I think overall, events like this boost morale,” said Aaron Gray, the center manager for the USO. “It gives you that extra stuff to do instead of just sitting in your room. You can get out and have comradery with others around the base and just enjoy yourself while you are here in Iwakuni. There are many things to do while you are stationed here in Japan, and this (event) is just one of the many great things our base has to offer.”
