PENSACOLA, Fla. – During a recent Saturday afternoon, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Kevin Schneider saved the life of one of his neighbors in Cantonment, Florida, April 14.

Schneider, a cryptologic warfare officer, has served in the Navy for 25 years. He is currently an instructor and legal officer for the Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Corry Station onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola Corry Station, Florida, where he’s served since Dec. 2016.

Schneider and his wife, Lorah, were on their way to an early dinner date and while driving down the street of their Bristol Park neighborhood, they witnessed a few people next to a car parked along the street.

“When we approached the people and vehicle, the scene seemed a bit chaotic,” shared Schneider. “I stopped my car and asked the group if they needed any help.”

At that time, Norma Hickerson said, “Yes please, we need help!” Norma is the wife of Ernest Hickerson, the 78-year-old man that was experiencing a life-threating medical emergency.

Schneider was told Ernest had been cutting his lawn when the medical emergency occurred, roughly a minute prior to Schneider’s arrival.

“Kevin and Lorah immediately exited their vehicle and Schneider took charge of the situation,” said Norma. “I could immediately tell Kevin was a gift from God, because in a split second, Kevin took emergency actions to help my husband while also helping me to remain calm.”

Schneider’s Navy and certified recreational rescue diver life-saving training instantly kicked into action.

Schneider directed his wife to call 911 and he then assessed Ernest’s vitals. At the time, Ernest was not breathing and had a weak pulse. Schneider opened Ernest’s airway and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). After a short time, Ernest took a deep breath and regained consciousness. However, Ernest then again stopped breathing and lost consciousness. Schneider repeated the CPR process, resuscitating Ernest again.

Soon after, local emergency medical technicians arrived and transported Ernest to the hospital with Norma.

“I attribute my actions to the training I’ve received throughout my Navy career,” said Schneider. “At IWTC Corry Station, all instructors maintain current CPR qualifications and the qualification proved invaluable to help save Ernest’s life. I’m truly grateful we just happened to be in the right place at the right time to lend a hand, and I’m relieved Ernest survived.”

The following morning, Schneider and his wife visited the Hickersons. They were greeted at the door by Norma and she delivered a hug to both. Norma then shared the great news that Ernest recovered and was released from the hospital the night of the medical emergency. Norma shared that, thanks to them, Ernest was taking a nap and was doing great.

“Ernest wouldn’t be here today without the help of Kevin and Lorah,” said Norah. “I truly feel Kevin was an angel sent by God Kevin saved Ernest’s life. We can’t be more thankful of what they’ve done for us.”

Schneider’s Commanding Officer Cmdr. Chad Smith wasn’t surprised to hear about Schneider’s actions during the event.

“Warrant Officer Schneider is always looking to lend a helping hand within our command and his community,” said Smith. “It’s no surprise he was able to save a man’s life, and I attribute his quick actions to his Navy training and who he is as a person. We are very fortunate to have him in our command and community.”

Information Warfare Training Command Corry Station, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
