After 35 years of service, U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Bryant Lambert, previous division command sergeant major of the 82nd Airborne Division, returned to Fort Bragg for his retirement ceremony Apr. 24 at the Hall of Heroes.
During his years of service, Lambert served 26 of them in the 82nd. His first assignment was with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Battalion 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in 1993 before it deactivated, and after multiple assignments he was selected as the division command sergeant major in July 2010.
“In my 35 years, I would say I was proudest when I made Sergeant.” said Lambert. “That was the turning point in my career. The Army trusted me to have responsibilities, and that was the highlight of my career, becoming a leader.”
Throughout his career, he served in multiple positions and numerous instructor positions training Officers, Noncommissioned Officers, and Soldiers. He has served on deployments in Grenada, Saudi Arabia, Haiti, three tours in Afghanistan and two tours in Iraq.
Though his career is filled with extensive experiences, one of his most memorable moments are of the division paratroopers.
“When we did the All American Week Division Run, that was Esprit de Corps,” said Lambert. “Seeing all of those thousands and thousands of faces run past at the top of the hill. That was a sight to see.”
During his ceremony, approximately 80 friends and family were present to wish Lambert the best after his military career, including the 82nd Airborne Division Commander, Maj. Gen. Erik Kurilla, and the current division command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Ferrusi, Grace, his mother, and Ondreaya Lambert, his daughter.
As Kurilla gave his final remarks, he spoke of Lambert’s ability to develop and teach those he encountered through the years.
“That’s what leadership is really about, not so much developing more followers, but rather developing more leaders,” said Kurilla. “And that's certainly what Sgt. Maj. has done. We can all rest easy that the next generation will be up to the task of keeping liberty safe, thanks to the leadership of Command Sgt. Maj. Lambert.”
Lambert's achievements include recognition as the 82nd Airborne Division and United States Army Forces Command Noncommissioned Officer of Year, selected as the Commandants Awardee and Leadership Awardee for Drill Sergeant School, and he won the Fort Bragg Iron Mike competition.
