JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Cmdr. Scott Carter, who led Fleet Readiness Center Southeast Detachment Jacksonville to sterling success as officer in charge, called it a career April 19.

Carter, who took charge in Oct. 2014 amid complex changes occurring with its platforms, led the detachment to tremendous scores on its last two aviation maintenance inspections, including a score of 98.9 on its last in March.

“The sundown of the P-3 aircraft was a major hurdle for us,” Carter said. “The reach and pursuit of getting more P-8 Poseidon capabilities was one of our main focuses.

“The way that our Sailors were eager to get those new capabilities – the composite repair, the tires, the batteries – made the change much easier.”

Carter’s accomplishments belie the fact he joined the Navy relatively late, at the age of 28 in 1991. However, the Millbrae, California native’s career took off in short order.

After twice being designated as his unit’s Junior Sailor of the Year and earning a college degree, Carter was commissioned as an ensign in 1998.

He had several deployments, including aboard carriers and with patrol squadrons, which gave him a unique skillset to take over Detachment Jacksonville. His experience and skill has shown.

“Cmdr. Carter is an accomplished naval leader who has harnessed the immense talent of our level two maintenance professionals,” FRCSE Commanding Officer Capt. Trent DeMoss said. “He’s been the driving force behind the success of Detachment Jacksonville.”

Charged with continuing that success is Cmdr. Mike Polito, who took over as the new officer in charge at the ceremony.

As for Carter, he’s looking forward to spending some much-deserved time with his family.
“One thing about being in the military for a long time is that you rarely get to see your extended family – especially when they’re on another coast like my family,” he said. “My brother and I have been planning to take a fly-fishing trip for 10 years since my father passed away.

“We’re finally going to make it.”
