The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Jordan Armed Forces practiced reinforcing and then evacuating civilian personnel from an “embassy” during Exercise Eager Lion 2018 today.
The Marines, based off of the U.S.S. Iwo Jima in the Port of Aqaba, flew MV-22 “Ospreys” to the King Abdullah II Special Operations Center to reinforce security after protests erupted at the “embassy” gate. .
U.S. Marine Col. Farrell Sullivan, the commander of the 26th MEU, said the coordination with the JAF was excellent.
“I’ve done multiple real-world missions at various embassies,” Sullivan said. “I’ve never experienced any [training] that has been this realistic before.”
As role players escalated the protests, Sullivan said the mission changed from reinforcement to a noncombatant evacuation. Marines then began the process of transporting the U.S. citizens – volunteers from the U.S. Embassy-Amman – to a safer location, while dealing with the simulated protests.
Marine Sgt. Dustin Mason, also of the 26th MEU, said that integrating the Jordanian soldiers and U.S. embassy volunteers helped the MEU identify logistical issues to consider in the future.
