Marine Corps Community Services’ Education Assistance Branch facilitated the National Education Expo at the Goettge Memorial Field House on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, April 18.
The expo is a biannual event that keeps service members and their families updated on educational opportunities.
“(The expo) is to keep the Marines informed on what’s available to them for colleges, not only on base, but throughout the United States,” said Jim Steadman, the education assistance branch manager for MCB Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River Marine and Family Programs. “There are a lot of opportunities, between the 50 to 60 colleges and universities, where Marines and their family members can come in and see what they want to do.”
Colleges and universities offer a variety of programs that allow service members and their families to effectively and efficiently pursue their goals.
“There are education opportunities from certificate programs all the way up to masters (degrees),” said Pete Harris, the education assistance branch chief for Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River MFP. “If they want to do vocational pieces, those options are out there as well.”
One of the programs that the Education Assistance Branch offers at the expo is Troops to Teachers.
“Troops to Teachers is a state program that helps individuals who want to get into that field to lock in jobs at schools and other areas,” said Harris. “Part of it is a mentorship as well.”
The main focus of the expo is to ensure that service members and their families receive information about the opportunities available to them.
“(The expo) is designed for everyone to leave here with resources they weren’t aware of before they came in,” said Harris.
The various school representatives provided brochures, links and contact information informing attendees of the numerous resources available to them.
“It was very helpful in terms of getting information,” said Cpl. Victoria Dellatorre, administrative specialist for Headquarters and Support Battalion, Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Installations East. “I feel like the people representing the colleges are very helpful with giving information and they seem enthusiastic in wanting to help people who are coming to ask questions.”
The mission of the Education Assistance Branch is to assist personnel beginning or completing their journey toward their college degree which is why they provide the expo and many more opportunities.
“The Education Assistance Branch is a great resource and it’s kind of that hidden secret,” said Harris. “Some people just don’t realize that all those resources are there and the education expos, unit briefs, financial aid and all those services that we provide is to show we are here to help people achieve their personal and professional goals.”
