Volunteers from across the local community were praised on a national scale for their hard work and dedication during the President’s Volunteer Service Award ceremony at Marston Pavilion, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, April 25.
The PVSA is a volunteer awards program that encourages all citizens to live a life of service by nationally recognizing the hours volunteers give to communities.
“The President’s Volunteer Service Awards is a highly coveted award for Marines, spouses and even kids to receive,” said Sarah Heitink, Marine Corps Family Team Building volunteer coordinator, Marine and Family Programs, Marine Corps Community Services.
Volunteers who have achieved the required hours of service for their age in a year, or cumulative hours over a lifetime, receive the corresponding award.
“President’s Volunteer Service Award gives different awards; they give bronze, silver, gold and then a lifetime achievement award,” said Jennifer Sutton, MCFTB volunteer coordinator, Marine and Family Programs, MCCS.
The PVSA is a nationally recognized program that allows volunteers to place and track their hours on the website.
“(This ceremony) is for everyone to take a moment and recognize the hours that volunteers give back to the community,” said Heitink. “Anytime a volunteer feels valued, they will continue to go that extra mile. A lot of time, energy, passion and dedication go into the programs that these volunteers support. ”
Irma Morales, a chair volunteer, overseeing volunteers in an assigned office, for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, was recognized for accumulating over 1,700 volunteer hours which led her to receive the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
“(When) volunteering I don’t expect (to receive an award), so this was a really big surprise,” said Morales. “This last year was an amazing year because I got to train a lot of volunteers.”
Over 100 volunteers from MCB Camp Lejeune and the surrounding communities that support Marine Corps Installations East attended the ceremony.
“It’s an initiative to recognize volunteers across the installations as well as out in the community,” said Heitink.
The base and units would not be the same without hardworking volunteers.
“What (volunteers) provide to our community is invaluable,” said Sutton. “The programs and resources we have would not be as robust without the volunteer staff and volunteer force that we have. There are so many people on this base that are passionate about this community.”
