ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Airmen and leaders of the 48th Fighter Wing gathered for the Lakenheath United through Real Talk open forum to discuss work and family life issues at the Education Center March 21.

The forum provides an opportunity for Airmen, civilians and dependents to speak candidly with wing leadership about matters that affect their quality of life in the U.S. Air Force.

This month’s Real Talk was geared towards the female’s perspective in celebration of Women’s History Month.

“I’m eager to hear what our female Airmen have to share,” said Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 48th Fighter Wing Command Chief Master Sergeant. “I’m sitting here because of two strong women, my mom and grandmother, so I know firsthand how resilient women are.”

According to a representative of the 48th Fighter Wing Equal Opportunity Office, due to an increase in females gravitating toward male dominated career fields, it is important to have a resource for candid conversations.

“I wanted to attend because I’m in a predominantly male office and it’s a struggle to get my voice heard,” said a participating Airman.

The monthly forum occasionally includes specific themes, however topics are not restricted. While this month’s session was female only, it highlighted issues concerning both genders.

“How we, as leadership, are taking care of our Airmen is something I’m passionate about,” Rendon said. “It concerns me to hear our NCOs say, ‘who’s taking care of us’, and I plan to have that echoed to our commanders.”

Facilitators from various support agencies are hand selected each month to be an additional sounding board and source of information for participants.

Carolina Yepez, 48th Fighter Wing sexual assault response coordinator said the current goal is not to change the entire U.S Air Force, the focus is to make RAF Lakenheath the best it can be for all Liberty Wing personnel and their families.

“I find that I always take away so much from these monthly meetings with our Airmen,” Rendon said. “There’s no real agenda, let’s just keep it real.”
