SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany—Eighteen Airmen from the Washington Air National Guard’s 141st Air Refueling Wing and 194th Wing completed annual training with the 52nd Fighter Wing here for nearly two weeks in April. Guard members augmented 52nd Fighter Wing work sections based at Spangdahlem, learned best practices from overseas active duty Air Force counterparts, and conducted training and professional development for members of the 52nd.
“It was outstanding exposure for our Airmen in terms of increasing their skillsets and knowing what to expect on an active duty base,” said Maj. Eric Manewal, director of inspections for the 194th Wing. “We’re increasing our ability to integrate with our active duty brethren. We were able to learn from each other and get to know one another better.”
Guard members conducted safety inspections, processed legal paperwork, and advised senior NCOs on personnel issues. Members of the 194th Wing Equal Opportunity Office provided an equal opportunity briefing to new Airmen stationed at Spangdahlem and worked on a Defense Equal Opportunity Climate Survey. “We provided them a service they would never be able to provide on their own,” said Master Sgt. Eric Turner, Equal Opportunity NCOIC for the 194th Wing.
Staff Sgt. Shanice Travis of the 141st Comptroller Flight helped to process packages for new active duty members in the 52nd. She said that she was able to perfect her grasp of the gaining process, which will especially come in handy when active duty members transfer into the 141st.
Staff Sgt. Arizbeth Merino Moreno, a personnel specialist in the 194th Mission Support Group, said she was able to take part in personnel work at the Wing level, and she enjoyed “meeting a lot of great people.”
“Every time we do these we remove some stigma that the Guard might have about active duty and vice versa,” said Senior Master Sgt. Damian Smith, 194th Wing First Sergeant. “It’s a proof of concept that the Guard and active duty can come together to meet mission needs.”
Senior Airman Katana Serrano of the 194th Wing legal office processed around 300 court martial jury selection data sheets and reviewed status of discipline presentation materials for the 52nd Fighter Wing legal office. She said that the experience was beneficial for the work she does back at Camp Murray. “It allowed me to learn how to streamline some of our processes, especially for the status of discipline slides that I worked on,” she said.
Serrano also said she appreciated the opportunity to build relationships with her fellow Guard members during the annual training. “It allowed me to get to know Wing staff members much better,” she said.
