WIESBADEN, Germany - Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Salles, an assistant inspector general with U.S. Army Europe, was recognized as the Department of the Army Inspector General non-commissioned officer of the Year in Fort Belvoir, Va. on Apr. 19.
Forty non-commissioned officers worldwide competed to be IG NCO of the year. The top five went on to the Department of the Army level competition.
“It was a great accomplishment for anyone who went to compete,” said Salles. “There was tough competition, but I think competition brings out the best in everyone. I feel really good for coming out on top.”
There were several different events throughout the competition. The first task in the competition was to write an essay about a new Army directive and how it might affect the IG field. Competitors also took a written exam, a physical fitness test, completed a mystery event, which this year was an interactive computer training program in which a Lt. Col. was interviewed on allegations of adultery and misuse of a cell phone, and then were interviewed by a board of IG sergeants major.
“I try to know my job the best I can. In the IG office there are a lot of things going on, but whenever I have time, I study and make sure that I am good on my physical fitness” Salles said.
