U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Alexandra H. Fox, a Military Policeman (MP) with Law Enforcement Detachment, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is currently deployed aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7). The 26th MEU is participating in a deployment at sea to conduct maritime and peacekeeping operations as well as maintain relations with foreign militaries through joint exercises.
Fox was constantly told that she wouldn’t be able to graduate high school early to join the Marines.
“Every day I’d hear, ‘no, you can’t do this,’ but there’s going to be one thing you’re passionate about that’s going to be the big one,” Fox said. “Sometimes it takes hearing no so many times to find what that passion is, and for me it was the Marine Corps.”
She had many doubters, but that didn’t stop her from going after what she wanted.
“I always wanted to be a Marine, ever since I was nine years old, so when I was a sophomore in high school I started taking college classes to speed up the process,” Fox said. “I finished high school a year early because really the only thing that motivated me was the Marine Corps. I left for boot camp in February 2016 and in May, I was able to come back home and graduate from high school as a Marine.”
Growing up, one of Fox’s goals was to become an MP, and she was able to pursue that through the Marine Corps.
“We do a variety of things, however, my primary job is detainee handling,” Fox said. “Some of the other things we do are mounted and dismounted patrols, entry control points, and vehicle check points.”
Aside from being an MP, Fox also volunteered to join the Female Engagement Team (FET) during the deployment.
“Success to me is progressive. I’m proud of myself for how far I’ve made it, but I expect more out of myself,” Fox said. “I made it as a Marine, as an MP, and now I’m on the FET. I can see how my goals have been progressing, but now it’s on to my next one.”
Despite the naysayers, she kept pushing towards her ambitions.
“I realized that there’s always going to be people telling you it’s not possible. And there are some who may genuinely want to help you and just don’t know how to,” Fox said. “But the only person who can help you is you. If you have a goal, you have to make it happen, no one else will.”
