The 14th Security Forces Squadron and local law enforcement will be honoring and observing National Police Week May 14-19 through several events and demonstrations.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls is now known as Police Week.

“Police Week is about showing the base community that we are there to help them,” said Tech. Sgt. Stacy Powell, 14th SFS NCO in charge of training. “We are here to protect you and your family.

“It takes a lot to be a defender,” Stewart said. “We train every day to ensure we are making the best possible decision in a split second to save lives.”

The events for the week will include:

    24-hour Defender’s March -- Starts at 7 a.m. May 14

The march represents how security forces works to provide safety and security 24/7. Anyone from base is welcome to join and support the defenders as they see them walking.

Demonstration Day -- Security Forces warehouse, Building 205, May 15

The day will consist of a K-9 demonstration from 8-9 a.m., a RedMan Suit and Taser demonstration from 9-9:30 a.m., and a vehicle stop/high risk demonstration from 9:30-10 a.m.

    Fallen Defender’s Memorial -- 10 a.m. May 16 at the Columbus Club

“This event is our way of acknowledging and recognizing the fallen defenders that have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” said Tech. Sgt. Miguel Stewart, 14th SFS NCO in charge of operations.

Battle of the (Function) Badges -- May 17

The competition amongst units on base will start with a “shoot, move, communicate” drill from 8-10 a.m., an obstacle course from 10:30 a.m.-noon, tug-of-war from 2-3 p.m., and security forces will finish the day with a bowling tournament.

    Thin Blue Line 5K -- Starts at 7 a.m. May 18

Following the 5k, doughnuts will be available to participants.
Retreat ceremony – 4:45 p.m. May 18 at Gene Smith Plaza
Retreat will feature the 14th SFS and the Columbus AFB Honor Guard at the plaza is located in front of the wing headquarters building.

Parade – 10-10:30 a.m. May 19 through State and Magnolia Housing

To wrap up National Police Week, the 14th SFS will host a parade and McGruff the crime dog is expected to make an appearance. Donations of candy for the parade can be dropped off at Building 926, Room 232.
