CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.—Camp Pendleton’s Fire Department and CAL FIRE San Diego responded to an 18-acre burn, Jacques fire, on May 9 in the Hotel training area on the East side of base, near Fallbrook, Calif.
Pendleton firefighters arrived on the scene of the fire near the intersection of De Luz Road and Wisecarver Road at 9:35 a.m. with three engines and a water tender. The firefighters requested mutual aid support from CAL FIRE who provided air coverage by dropping fire retardant; helping prevent the spread of the fire. The fire was 90 percent contained by 6:14 p.m. that day and was 100 percent contained shortly thereafter.
On average, 185 wildland fires happen aboard the installation annually consuming thousands of acres. Recently, firefighters began refreshing Camp Pendleton's 164 miles of fire breaks designed to control fires on the installation. This effort helps protect Camp Pendleton and the surrounding areas by creating a barrier between large areas of vegetation. Fire breaks are vital in preventing property damage and loss of life on and off base.
Yearly, Security and Emergency Services personnel conduct safety inspections, prevention awareness training, and controlled burns of dry vegetation to reduce the available fuels increasing their readiness and proficiency in combating future fires.
