The Office of the Chief of Army Reserve hosted a Spring Clean Donation Drive at Fort Belvoir, Virginia from April 18 through April 30 to commemorate Earth Day.
Soldiers, Civilians, contractors and Families donated over 600 pounds of apparel, housewares, books and electronics during the drive, which benefitted Goodwill of Greater Washington.
"Hosting a donation drive was the perfect way to celebrate Earth Day,” said Tyrone Cook, Army Reserve Solid Waste Program Coordinator, who facilitated the event. “The drive was a win-win situation for everyone. [The participants] accomplished their goals of decluttering their homes by donating unwanted and unused items. Someone in need will have access to those items, and someone will gain employment from handling those items. And, we will keep those items out of the landfill."
Cook said that the collection boxes were nearly overflowing with donations.
According to Jasmine Taylor, Marketing and Communications Manager for Goodwill of Greater Washington, the donations will be sold, and the proceeds will provide career training opportunities for individuals in the District of Columbia.
