Working in conjunction with the 678th ADA BDE was the 5-7 ADA battalion. Attending from the 678th ADA BDE contingency was Col. Richard A. Wholey Jr., Commander, Ltc. Tim Cassel, Deputy Commander, Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Collins, Command Sergeant Major and the staff representatives from the 678th ADA BDE. From the 5-7 ADA was Ltc. Barry Carter, BN Commander and Sgt. Maj. Daniel Hillburn and the 5-7 battery commanders and 1st Sgt's.

“This is just an exercise,” said U.S. Army Col. Richard A. Wholey Jr., “however the threat is real.”

Col. Wholey emphasized if we (ADA assets) ever find ourselves in a situation where we have to execute, we will be ready and this is one of those exercises which will be getting us ready.

“I will share a couple of general expectations from my fox hole, this is a rehearsal,” said Wholey. “This is an opportunity to de-conflict, so when we get to the battle space, we know what each battery is doing and how it will impact your formation.”

“Hopefully at the end of this drill we will have a clearer understanding of the concept of operations and what is ahead of us,” added Collins.

The 678th ADA BDE soldiers and Col. Richard A. Wholey Jr., hosted this ROC drill on the future footprint of the 5-4 ADA BN scheduled to stand up later this year.

Addressing the battery commanders Wholey said, “There are two things I would like you to talk about. First, what is the risk to your soldiers and what are you doing to alleviate those risks? Secondly, from your perspective, what do you define as success?”

The ceremony included the primary BDE staff, special staff and battery commanders. The battery commanders were responsible for briefing their phases of the Saber Strike exercise.

In conclusion, Wholey shared several interesting facts in history. “I am somewhat of a sub-history fanatic,” stated Wholey. “This day in 1573, Henry of Valois was elected the first King of Poland. Ironically we are going to be in Poland. In 1858, Minnesota was recognized as the 32nd state and in 1998, the French mint produced the first European currency known as the EURO.”

“For freedom, we defend,” concluded Wholey.
