TAJI MILITARY COMPLEX, Iraq – U.S. Congressmen John Carter - District 31 and Roger Williams – District 25 traveled from the U.S. to Erbil, Iraq to visit Soldiers assigned to the 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment May 3, 2018.
The congressmen are very supportive of service members at Fort Hood, Texas. Traveling 7,517 miles to Erbil would give them the opportunity to not only meet with Soldiers face to face but also gain a better understanding of military operations in the Middle East to strengthen military and diplomatic support from Congress.
“I had the opportunity to meet with troops from all over Texas and the U.S.,” said Williams. “After spending a week with our military men and women, I am more confident than ever that we will win the fight to ensure lasting peace in the region, while also defending American interests abroad.”
Soldiers from the 7-17th CAV gave a hands-on tour of an AH-64E Apache, explaining its maneuver and capabilities. The 7-17th CAV Commander Lt. Col. Chad Corrigan and Command Sgt. Maj. Brandon Perry explained the 7-17th CAV overall mission and how they support operations for Operation Inherent Resolve during a tour of the Erbil airfield.
“Representatives Carter and Williams visited us so that they could personally thank everyone and remind us that America supports us,” said Corrigan. “The Soldiers appreciated the gratitude and understood that these busy leaders had taken the time to come see them.”
The 7-17th CAV is a battalion attached to the 449th Combat Aviation Brigade whose mission is to conduct reconnaissance and security operations to identify and locate enemy forces in support of ongoing contingency operations.
“For the last week, I’ve had the opportunity to visit with III Corps Soldiers leading the Coalition fight against ISIS and to say I’m extremely proud and immensely grateful for these Soldiers would be an understatement,” said Carter.
