COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group participated in a health and wellness seminar at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort, May 3 - 4, 2018.

This is the second seminar of its kind for the battalion. The first health and wellness seminar was held last year after their first deployment to Afghanistan.

“We planned the seminar off-site to help our Soldiers and families find resources to help them through the good and bad in life,” said the 10th Group officer who organized the event. “I specifically focused on finding speakers that were previously Green Berets or ones with military experience that could easily relate to the struggles that we face regularly.”

Lt. Col. Kevin Trujillo, the 2nd Battalion Commander, pushed for this event when he became commander last year after the deployment. The two-day seminar was for the Soldiers and their family members. During the seminar, families were made aware of the resources and services that are available they may not have known before.

“Coming into command, it’s the one thing that I can control, to take care of the team,” Trujillo said. “Guys just can’t come home from being in a really intense environment and just stop.”

At this years’ seminar the guest speakers ranged from civilian doctors, a nutritionist, active duty service members, and retired military service members. Among them were Mr. Michael Jackson, a retired medical sergeant and current instructor at the medical sergeant course in Fort Bragg, Maj. Nicholas Barringer and Cpt. William Conkright, both United States Army Special Operations Command dieticians, Cpt. Rhea Racaza, 1st Battalion, 10th SFG (A) psychologist and Mr. John Uhlinger, 10th SFG personal financial counselor, to name a few.

“These programs were very helpful for the Soldiers who attended,” Uhlinger said. “Now they know who to go to if their Soldiers or family members need assistance.”

Each speaker explained what their field of expertise was and the resources available to Soldiers, often using personal experiences as a way to educate the Soldiers and family members. Guest speakers talked on subjects ranging from finance classes to mental and physical resilience training, and even yoga, to the Green Berets and their families.
Each training event carried the goal of keeping these operators and their families ready for whatever the future holds in 10th Group and beyond.

“Ultimately it’s about readiness,” Trujillo said. “If our families and our guys aren’t prepared mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, then they are not going to perform out in a combat environment. Hopefully we can continue these after every deployment.”
