The color guard played an important role during the Fort McCoy Garrison change-of-command ceremony May 19, 2018, at Fort McCoy, Wis.
Col. Hui Chae Kim took command of the garrison from Col. David J. Pinter Sr.
Color guard details began in the U.S. military during the time of the Civil War, according to Army history. A band would accompany Soldiers to keep Soldiers marching in step and to keep their spirits high. Alongside the band were a few flag bearers.
A color guard is the combination of military drill with marching and the use of flags, bayonets, and rifles. At Fort McCoy for ceremonies such as this, a color guard is often made up of Soldiers from the garrison as well as other units.
The change-of-command ceremony took place at the same time as the 2018 Armed Forces Day Open House at the installation.
