BAGHDAD – Serving as the senior enlisted leader of a unit, entrusted with the care of those who serve under you, can be the most rewarding yet challenging mission; and, as is always the case, all good things must eventually come to an end.

Such was the case, Dec. 2, when Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey Palmer passed the reins of responsibility for providing for the care of the Soldiers, Airmen and civilians of the 716th Military Police Battalion to Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Woodring during a change of responsibility ceremony.

Palmer completed a 31-month tour of duty with the 716th MP Bn., 8th Military Police "Watchdog" Brigade, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, which included the past 12 months deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Under his watch, the unit has earned many accolades, to include multiple brigade Soldier and Non-commissioned Officer of the Quarter board winners, 18th MP Bde.'s NCO and Soldier of the Year, the Army Maintenance Award of Excellence, first and second place awards in the Military Police Regimental Warrior Team competition, and the J.P. Holland Award presented to the best MP Company in the Army.

During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Darryl Johnson, the commander of the 716th MP Bn., credited the success of the unit to the leadership of Palmer as well as his capabilities and dedication.

"When it is truly important, you turn to Command Sgt. Maj. Palmer," he added.

Palmer's follow-on assignment is to assume the position of brigade command sergeant major of the 14th Military Police Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where he will reunite with his wife, Darlene, and his family.

Woodring accepted the responsibility for the Soldiers of the "Peacekeeper" battalion during the ceremony. He has served with distinction at all levels in the Military Police Corps from team leader to first sergeant. Woodring's most recent position was the operations sergeant major for the 716th throughout its deployment in Baghdad.

"I am honored to have the privilege to lead the Peacekeepers of the 716th," said Woodring. He took a moment to thank his wife and family for their sacrifice since they were unable to attend this special day in his career.

The ceremony concluded as dusk fell on Camp Liberty.

"Two great men received their just rewards and will advance to help our battalion, the Army and our nation," said Johnson.
