NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass.- After a demanding year as a 4.2 GPA junior at Foxborough Regional Charter School, one high school athlete is taking on an even more demanding challenge - a leadership development academy hosted by one of the country's toughest military services - The U.S. Marines.
Max Norteman, a successful student-athlete and community volunteer, applied for the Marine Corps Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy, known as the SLCDA. His hard work was rewarded when he learned he was selected as one of the few high school students in the country selected to attend the program, which runs this year in July.
"I want to take what I've learned so far and maximize it," said Norteman. "I want to be the best leader possible in the future and expect the SLCDA training to prepare me for college, the military and beyond."
Norteman's past leadership roles include spending six years in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, rugby player and wrestling team captain.
What little free time Norteman does have is spent volunteering with the AmeriCorps, YMCA, American Legion and his school. Between volunteering and serving as a leader he also finds time to perform as an actor at his school and serve as a member of the National Honor Society.
"Working on yourself is important during adolescence," Norteman said. "It's the start of everything, and if you just slide by, it can set you back."
After attending the academy, Norteman plans on applying to top Universities in the area. Following college, Norteman has his goal set of earning the title of Marine as a Marine Corps officer.
"What I notice about the Marines is they're the best, and they take pride in what they do," said Norteman. "I've always been motivated to get the goals I have achieved, and the Marines have the same motivation and mindset."
Norteman credits much of his success to his peers, family and mentors.
"My parents and my twin sister are a big support for me," Norteman said. "There's nothing like a bond between twins, and we're always pushing each other to be successful."
As one of the few selectees for the program, Norteman will be able to share his experiences with students who have comparable goals.
"I'm excited to meet people at SLCDA who have similar motivations as me," said Norteman. "SLCDA represents the best of our youth, and it's going to be a great experience to be around people who push each other to be better."
Norteman has his goal set on becoming a Marine, but also recommends other students who aren't interest in the military still to apply for the leadership program .
"There's no other youth leadership program that's like it," Norteman said. "The leadership training you can gain from the Marines can be harnessed no matter where you're going."
