Members of the U.S. Fleet Forces Band “Brass Band,” based out of Norfolk, performed a free show for the public during Fleet Week New York (FWNY) at the South Street Seaport.
“We are out here so that we can showcase the Navy, connect with all of the people wherever we perform and just try to bring a smile people's faces using music,” said Musician 2nd Class Carl Schulte, from Detroit.
Throughout Fleet Week the band will perform at various locations to highlight the military while increasing the visibility of the Navy.
“New York can be a pretty expensive city, so it's wonderful to have opportunities like that that are free and open to everyone,” said Jonathan Anderson, who helped to coordinate the event. “It's so cool to be able to come out here and experience this fabulous music and it's also a great way for the public to connect with the military.”
In addition to musical performances, the public will have opportunities to tour participating Navy and Coast Guard ships as well as a chance to meet the men and women who serve in today's fleet.
FWNY, now in its 30th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
