PENSACOLA, Fla. – In preparation for a Department of Defense (DoD) initiative that provides service members with information on safety concerns commonly associated with the summer months, more than 2,500 Sailors and Marines assigned to Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) and Marine Aviation Training Support Group attended a safety standdown onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola May 24.
The two-hour presentation in the Charles Taylor Hangar reminded the largely junior-enlisted attendees of safety considerations to review at the onset of DoD’s "101 Critical Days of Summer," a campaign sponsored by the Naval Safety Center beginning Memorial Day weekend and continuing through Labor Day.
Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer activities and has historically shown to have an increase in off-duty safety incidents.
“During this upcoming time of school breaks, vacations, warm weather and random family outings, many of us will take part in activities that aren't a part of our normal routines,” said Krystal Hancock, the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) safety manager. “The increased opportunities for fun also bring with them an increased chance of incidents and mishaps. The ‘101 Critical Days of Summer’ campaign is designed to mitigate the risk of injury by educating personnel and reinforcing methods of avoiding potential mishaps, and it’s something all CNATT units and detachments do.”
With the significant number of junior Sailors and Marines attending classes at NATTC, the safety standdown is an annual event with a variety of topics of regional and general interest. Highlighting the safety standdown was a nearly hour-long interactive presentation from Street Smart, Stay Alive From Education (S.A.F.E.) for making smart driving choices. The program centered around distracted driving, seatbelt use and driving under the influence. Program facilitators demonstrated the consequences bad driving choices from their firsthand observations.
The two-hour program also included presentations from Escambia County Sheriff's Office representatives discussing traffic safety, motorcycle guidelines, a beach and water safety brief from Santa Rosa Island Authority personnel and a heat-injury prevention and identification brief from Naval Hospital Pensacola medical staff.
“Safety is an all-hands effort, something each and every service member – whether student or staff, Navy or Marine Corps – needs to always think about,” said Sean Brown, NATTC safety manager. “The most important part of our Navy and Marine Corps is our people, and making sure each and every Sailor, Marine and civilian employee is aware of recreational and occupational risks is something we strive to impart on all who come through our schoolhouse doors.”
For more than 70 years, with the last two decades at NAS Pensacola, NATTC has been providing training and increasing readiness within the Naval Aviation Enterprise (NAE). The facility graduates approximately 15,000 Navy, Marine Corps and international students annually.
NATTC is part of the CNATT, which provides single-site management for Navy and Marine Corps aviation technical training.
CNATT is the technical training agent for the NAE, an organization designed to advance and sustain naval aviation warfighting capabilities at an affordable cost under the Naval Education and Training Command.
