NEW YORK — More than 50 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen participated in the 4th Annual Fleet Week Regatta at the New York Harbor during Fleet Week New York, May 26th.
Service members from several commands, including the USS Mitscher (DDG 57) and USS Zephyr (PC 8), participated in racing 24 identical sailboats in the friendly competition.
The event was hosted by the Manhattan Yacht Club and sponsored by the New York Harbor Sailing Foundation and the New York Council Navy League.
Participating members from HMCS Moncton (MM 708) Halifax, Nova scotia Canada won the race.
Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Daniel Holmes from the USS Mitscher, "It was a great event. It was fun to go out and sail and experience something new and exciting."
FWNY, now in its 30th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
