NEW YORK – The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum hosted service members and veterans for its annual Memorial Day ceremony during Fleet Week New York (FWNY) 2018, May 28.
Guest speakers included New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Adm. Christopher Grady, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, among others.
“After 34 years of Naval service, I’ve had the honor of serving our nation around the globe,” said Grady. “Today I can tell you with the utmost confidence that the patriotism shown in this country, the respect paid to our fallen, once again as is highlighted here in this great city, is the most profound I have witnessed.
The mayor addressed the many former USS Intrepid (CV 11) crew members in attendance.
“A torpedo attack and four kamikaze attacks,” said de Blasio. “Many times this ship could have been counted out, but Intrepid kept coming back. And everyone who served on this ship, I thank you and I honor you.”
During the ceremony, guests including U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, threw four commemorative wreaths into the Hudson River to pay tribute to military members who lost their lives in past and current conflicts, including our allied military members and the crew of the Intrepid.
The ceremony ended with the unfurling of a 100-foot American flag and members of all branches services – active, reserve and retired – were invited to hold the flag in memory of fallen service members, followed by a three-volley rifle salute and the playing of “Taps.”
FWNY, now in its 30th year, is the city's time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today's maritime services.
