FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq – Today's Soldier in Focus is Capt. Travis Maples, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. Maples is a native of Sacramento, Calif.
He graduated from California State University in Sacramento and has a wife and son. Noting differences from his 2003 deployment to Baghdad, he said the fight was mostly kinetic then but now is more focused on building rapport with Iraqis.
He sees Soldiers balancing kinetic missions with giving children toys and providing Iraqi-event security. He said he feels Soldiers can handle these greater demands.
