Junior leaders from the Regimental Engineer Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment showed their support for the Vilseck Elementary School Robotics Club by helping to host a community building hands-on display at Rose Barracks, Germany, May 22, 2018.

The staff at VES hoped to give the Robotics Club students a fun and realistic experience. The engineers introduced the students to the Talon 4 and Buffalo MK5, anti-IED systems used to protect warfighters from explosives. This display was the culminating event for the club, giving students a chance to interact with the operators and even operate the robots themselves.

“We love coming out and interacting with children,” shared 1st Lt. Sarah Rosachi, platoon leader, RES, 2CR. “We’ve done it in a few different countries so it’s really cool to have the chance to do it locally and interact with kids who are already familiar with the equipment. It’s a great opportunity for the Soldiers to connect with the community and for the community to get a better idea of what we do.”

Students saw firsthand how the robots and toys they have built throughout the year relate to the most advanced military technology available today. Daniel O’Brien, a Robotics Club assistant, taught the students by reinforcing the universal principals of engineering that are required to make and maintain the machines. These principles are equally applicable to students completing their final projects as they are to Soldiers operating life-saving technology, like the Talon 4 and Buffalo MK5. For the Soldiers and staff, the event was especially rewarding, as it helped strengthen the bond between the military and the local community.

“This has helped the students to gain an understanding of the real world application in the robotics aspect of the military equipment,” said Lindsey von Dohlen, head of the VES Robotics Club.

This event was a worthwhile opportunity for Soldiers and for students with a passion for science and technology.
