CENTENNIAL, Colo. – The Colorado National Guard Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Enhanced Response Force Package will exercise a response to a chemical agent and a mass-casualty incident June 1-3 at the North Metro Fire Training Center, Brighton, Colorado.
U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Klassy, CONG 8th Civil Support Team communications specialist, will also demonstrate the equipment and training he used to help protect lives during the Hawaii volcano emergency.
The CONG deployed one member to the Island of Hawaii for one week this month to augment the Arizona National Guard’s 91st CST, which needed additional support to fulfill their response requirements. The member provided communications and liaison support. Colorado, Arizona and Hawaii are part of the same National Guard Weapons of Mass Destruction region.
“Helping our neighbors during their time of need is what we do,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Michael Loh, the Adjutant General of Colorado. “In this case, we provided support for a regional partner to help the people of the Big Island of Hawaii.”
The CERFP is based at Buckley Air Force Base, Aurora, Colorado.
On order of the Governor, the unit responds to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents, assisting local, state, tribal, and federal agencies by providing capabilities to perform patient and mass-casualty decontamination, emergency medical services, and casualty search and extraction.
Colorado is one of 17 states with a CERFP.
Such units are federally resourced, trained, equipped, and sustained, but state-controlled.
The unit is preparing for an external validation.
