Story by 1st Lt. Michael Marks

    2d Cavalry Regiment

The Forward Logistics Element assigned to the Regimental Support Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment, kicked off U.S. Army Europe's exercise Saber Strike 18 with a tactical road march from Vilseck, Germany to Powidz, Poland, May 29 - 3, 2018. The FLE, headed by Maj. Jed W. Hudson, executive officer, RSS, established uninterrupted logistical support to validate the Regiment's ability to rapidly deploy within 96 hours..

The FLE also executed a TRM with 4th Squadron, 2CR and host nation police support. This movement will continue over the course of the next week with the FLE being absorbed into the RSS, 2CR tactical operations center in Lithuania.

“No movement throughout Europe is ever the same and we are consistently learning," said 1st Lt. Jose Targa, convoy commander, FLE, RSS, 2CR. "After conducting the TRM to Moldova in 2016 and to Macedonia in 2017, nothing compared to the complexity of the first and second movements of Saber Strike 18. The Soldiers displayed a high level of discipline and mental fortitude driving through the night after preparing all day. It was an opportunity for junior leaders to execute the commander’s intent and watch as junior non-commissioned officers provided successful, round-the-clock maintenance support."

The FLE executed self-sustainment operations to include internal recovery and refueling on-the-move. Prior to the start of each movement, junior leaders conducted convoy briefs focused on safety and contingency plans.

Throughout the Saber Strike 18 TRM, the Soldiers were able to experience first-hand the support and appreciation of the regiment as they crossed through Czechia and Poland. Citizens in both Czechia and Poland welcomed the convoy, waving United States flags as the American Soldiers passed through their towns.

“I’m excited to be a part of such a big movement and large Army exercise,” said Spc. Michael Wolford, information technology specialist, RSS, 2CR. “The support received from the people in each country was motivating and allowed me to continue to feel great about my service in the regiment and United States Army.”

In the upcoming days, FLE personnel will assist the ammunition transfer and holding point with distribution of training ammunition in Poland.

2CR's participation in Saber Strike 18 is designed to enhance readiness and interoperability with our allies and regional partners. This year’s exercise will integrate the Battle Group Poland, established in support of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence initiative and currently commanded by Lt. Col. Adam Lackey, commander, 1st Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment. More than 1,000 Strykers and other military support vehicles will convoy through Czechia, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
