Story by 1st Lt. Ellen Brabo

    2d Cavalry Regiment

More than 3,000 Soldiers and nearly 1,000 Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicles and military support vehicles have departed Rose Barracks, Germany in support of Saber Strike 18. These Soldiers will conduct a tactical road march through Germany, Czechia, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia over the course of the month.

Outlaw Troop, 4th Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment was the first to depart Rose Barracks, May 28, 2018. Designated as the U.S. Army Europe contingency reaction force, Outlaw Troop must be ready to deploy on a no-notice mission within 48-hours of the alert, referred to as Readiness Posture 2.

“This is the first full regimental sized mission in my tenure, and serves as a realistic rehearsal of the Regiment’s combat mission here in Europe,” explained Lt. Col. Gregory Campion, commander, 4/2CR.

Prior to their departure, Col. Patrick J. Ellis, commander, 2CR and Command Sgt. Maj. Steven A. Brown, senior enlisted advisor, 2CR, conducted pre-combat checks and inspections to ensure their Soldiers were equipped for the mission ahead.

For some Soldiers, this will be their first time supporting a multinational training exercise. Others, like Sgt. Marius Siauciunas, 4/2CR, are no stranger to the Saber Strike mission, having participated in Saber Strike 16 as well. Siauciunas, a native of Kaunas, Lithuania, is excited for the opportunity to work alongside the Lithuanian military.

“It’s always nice meeting people that you probably grew up with and most likely you know the same people but [I’m] definitely looking forward to speaking the same language and being around my hometown,” shared Siauciunas.

Many months of training and maintenance went into preparing for the U.S. Army Europe-led multinational exercise. The squadrons completed troop level certifications and live fire exercises throughout the winter and focused their efforts on restoring their fleets to fully mission capable throughout the spring.

Saber Strike 18 is scheduled for June 3 – 15 and will encompass nearly 18,000 participants from 19 different countries.

“Saber Strike validates what we have been broadcasting for a long time,” said Campion. “The 2d Cavalry Regiment is ready to deploy at a moment’s notice, travel across the continent and show up where we are needed ready to fight and win.”
