The Saber Strike 18 exercise has begun and, with that, brings full scale battle simulations for the service members involved to enhance their real world military occupations and deployment logistics strategies. The Saber Strike 18 exercise is a multinational, multifaceted operation involving air, sea and land support which enhances its relevance toward real world deployment scenarios. One such training technique that is utilized is referred to as Opposition Force Training. Through staged scenarios like opposition force training, designated service members are given the chance to react to incoming attacks, ambushes, convoy operations, and air assaults. These exercises give service members the opportunity to learn the correct ways to shoot, move and communicate when presented with simulated deployment environment such as these.
Cpt. Sean Hayball, an intelligence observer assigned to Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany has begun preparations for this year’s opposition force training at Saber Strike 18 in Gmina Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland.
“My personal goal is to support rotational unit training by planning, managing and directing a realistic and challenging OPFOR at Drawsko Pomorskie Training Area,” said Hayball. “I hope to coach and train the [intelligence] section to improve their ability to provide predictive analysis to their Squadron Commander, and answer his priority intelligence requirements.”
This year the JMRC is partnering with the Polish Land Forces in support of the OPFOR training taking place at Saber Strike 18. The Polish Land Forces will assist in the OPFOR training by designating nearly 100 service members as well as additional vehicles with mounted weaponry and simulation anti-tank rounds for the exercise. 1st Lt. Piotr Wojnarowski, from the 18th Airborne Battalion, 6th Airborne Brigade, from Bielsko-Biala, Poland, is leading the exercise for the Polish Land Forces and is working closely with Hayball to ensure the exercise is and effective learning tool for all the nations involved during Saber Strike 18.
“This is a great operation and a huge opportunity to play a part in an exercise with such high goals, tempo and operational impact for the NATO alliance,” said Wojnarowski.
This year the JMRC, the U.S. Military and the Polish Land Forces have high expectations for this exercise. The OPFOR training taking place this year is expected to display the multinational ability to merge constructive, virtual and live training. The training is expected to engage in complex mission sets ranging from Joint Forcible Entry to Wet Gap Crossing exercises with a deployable observer controlled training package.
Exercises like OPFOR training combined with multinational partnerships through our NATO allies such as these are what strengthen our world-wide military posture as well as continue to defend and train our home fronts and military assets.
