Outlaw Troop and Palehorse Troop, 4th Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment paved the way for the unit by establishing a foothold and reconnoitering training areas for the regiment’s use during Saber Strike 18, June 2, 2018.
4/2CR, also known as Saber Squadron, was tasked to establish a foothold for 2nd Squadron and 3rd Squadron, 2CR, in order to ensure ideal areas in which to set up the regimental tactical operations center and the individual troop quartering areas for training.
Palehorse Troop assumed screening operations upon arrival to the Bemowo Piskie Training Area, which has the capacity to offer enough maneuver space to train scouts in reconnaissance operations and accommodate two additional squadrons. This allowed for junior leaders in the troop to hone their scouting techniques.
After driving for four days across three different countries with the help of NATO partners and allies, Palehorse Troop received its next training mission. In their scenario, with limited information and resources, Palehorse Troop successfully screened the training area, established observation points and painted a clear picture of the training site before the remainder of their squadron arrived.
The commander of Palehorse Troop, Capt. Brian Focareto, was very pleased with the performance of his troops.
“I’m extremely proud of everything our Soldiers have accomplished in the past four days,” said Focareto. “There is no doubt in my mind that we are ready to fight tonight.”
As a reconnaissance troop, this scenario accurately replicates what the Soldiers would have to do in a real world contingency situation.
“Saber Squadron demonstrated the rapid ability to receive an alert, marshal and deploy in less than 36-hours projecting combat power to support our allies 1,836km away,” said Maj. James Anderson, operations officer, 4/2CR. “We will consolidate the entire regiment in less than a week of notification, a distance similar from New York City to Jacksonville, Florida, demonstrating we are 'Always Ready'.”
2CR's participation in Saber Strike 18 is designed to enhance readiness and interoperability with our allies and regional partners. This year’s exercise will integrate the Battle Group Poland, established in support of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence initiative and currently commanded by Lt. Col. Adam Lackey, commander, 1st Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment. More than 1,000 Strykers and other military vehicles will cross through Czechia, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
